The very well known and local woman Kirsty Down has temporarily lost her sight after contracting meningitis.
PCSO Kirsty Down has been in Derriford Hospital for more than three days suffering from and having treatment for the infection of meningitis.
Sergeant Harry Tangye confirmed that Kirsty is conscious and doing well, but is suffering from the infection’s symptoms.
“The messages of support for Kirsty online have been really lovely,” Sergeant Tangye said.
“She can’t look at the screen to see them herself. One of the symptoms of meningitis is an extreme sensitivity to light – temporary blindness.”
Fellow police officers are now rallying around PSCO Down, who is part of the neighbourhood policing team in Saltash after she was taken into hospital.
Hundreds of messages of support came in from across the country as officers from as far afield as Nottinghamshire and the north of England to Tower Hamlets in London offered their best wishes to their colleague.
