The Southern Counties Senior Vase Final was played out on a blustery Moorlands Lane pitch and it was the visitors from Wiltshire who stamped a physical authority on the early exchanges in the encounter, with every thrust at the Saltash line snubbed out by resolute home defence.
The visitors’ share of possession and territory proved beneficial as they were over on the half hour for a try after a catch and drive line out that saw hooker Gareth Davis come up with the ball and a 5-0 lead for the visitors.
Saltash responded almost immediately with a penalty from fly half Harrison Reburn to close the gap to 5-3 after 36 minutes.
On the stroke of half time, a move up the left put left wing James Moriarty clear to score a fine try for an 8-5 half time lead.
The home side settled first and in the 47th minute a move in mid field put flanker Lewis Wells clear for a try, converted by Reburn for a 15-5 lead.
Almost from the re-start, Saltash put the game out of sight with a further try from centre Shaun Crawford, with Reburn adding the extras for a 22-5 lead with a half hour still to play.
The Former pupils were playing catch up and launched an onslaught on the Saltash line that saw several thrusts at the line repelled for the home side to clear and hang on to the lead for a semi-final place.
